Can We Say Liberica Coffee has its own “Universe”?

Getting to know Liberica coffee is still mysterious, exotic excitingly and questionable. Did you know that beside Robusta and Arabica coffee, there’s also Liberica coffee? The tree’s characteristics include broad leaves, disease resistance, and a height that can reach up to 12 meters. Liberica coffee has a distinctive characteristic: its exotic taste, with hints of jackfruit, dark honey, and a heavy body. The long aftertaste leaves a fruity syrup-like flavor and earthy to nutty sensations. I think this Liberica coffee will be very delicious if processed post-harvest using specific techniques like anaerobic honey/natural with V60 brewing.

This time we had the opportunity to visit a Liberica coffee plantation located in Menoreh, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. Being located in the highlands makes this Liberica coffee tree thrive in this area. Surprisingly, this Liberica coffee tree has been around since 1965, a historic year for Indonesia. What a long and historic journey just from the Liberica coffee tree. Making Liberica coffee from Menoreh have a new flavor in the coffee world we know, as if it has its own “universe.” In fact, these coffee trees were originally only treated as a means to meet the basic needs of the surrounding residents, and no one had seriously cultivated them.

From 2019 until now, this visionary coffee plantation program, which empowers local residents with a structured system, has been running. Thank you to Mas Tio for giving us the opportunity to visit the coffee plantation in Menoreh and enjoy delicious Liberica coffee.
